“I cannot stand oppression in whatever form”
Siti Zabedah Kasim – Malaysian – Lawyer (Interviewed in 2017)
SITI ZABEDAH KASIM HAS MADE IT HER MISSION to fight for rights of those who are oppressed. In so doing, she has attracted the wrath of those who claim to speak on behalf of others. And these are those who accuse her of being controversial but she says voicing one’s opinion is a right of any human being.
Siti read law at Queen Mary University in London. She returned to Malaysia in 2004 after 17 years abroad. Since her return, she has focused her activism on human rights issues, religion and the Orang Asli. Realising that she has only limited time in a day, she has chosen to work with the Orang Asli and has been successful in all of the cases brought to court.
For those who accuse her of courting controversy or loving publicity; the people whom she has helped will certainly disagree.
