Nga, Orang Asli hunter gatherer
Cameron Highlands
On the way up Cameron Highlands, I came across Nga as he was setting up his roadside stall. On that day, he had wild honey and other items foraged from the forest.
Nga’s people had been living the life of hunter gatherers in Cameron Highlands for generations, long before there was a Malaysia, or even a Malaya. As we stood together in the early mroning light, I felt humbled by his complete dependence on the forest for his livelihood and the faith that it will provide for him and his family.
On your road trips, if you see Nga or any other Orang Asli selling their fruit, honey and handicraft, do stop and buy. And please don’t drive too hard a bargain.
